Memphis is the city and capital of Ancient Egypt. Memphis is located south of the Nile River delta, on the west bank. Its location is about 15 miles (24 km) south of modern Cairo. Memphis is where the famous pyramids of Egypt are located and associated with the ancient city’s site are the cemeteries of necropolises. From north to south the main pyramid fields are Abū RuwayshGiza, Zāwiyat al-ʿAryān, Abū ṢīrṢaqqārah, and Dahshūr. The Memphis archaeological zone was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.

The plateau is filled with ancient art structures and artifacts of cultural-historical significance. The Memphis open-air museum at Mit Rahina is a diversion between Saqqara and Giza. It has a number of statues belonging to Ramses II, and sphinx, pieces of other statues, and the colossi of Ramses II.
